CHAPTER SEVENTEEN

I tried to cover all our bases before our trek to the mine. Knowing that Daniels was framing the mine as a protected historical site to keep people away, we needed hard evidence to counter those claims. I had a hunch Tony, the historian I’d met at the sushi bar, might be a good source of information.

The next day, I reached out to the community college, and after a few calls, I got Tony on the phone.

“Hey, Tony! It’s Libby. I’m not sure you’ll actually remember me, but we met at Satori Sushi? We also briefly talked at the coffee shop recently.”

After a moment’s pause, he replied warmly, “Libby! Of course, I remember. To what do I owe the pleasure?”

“I need some help researching an old mine,” I explained. “I’ve heard that it’s been deemed a historical site and thought you might point me in the right direction to verify that information.”

Tony sounded intrigued. “I’d be happy to help. There’s a lot of lore around old mines in the area. If you can give me the name, I’ll dig into what we have in the archives and see if there’s anything significant about it.”

I quickly filled him in, mentioning its history as an amethyst mine. Tony paused thoughtfully. “This doesn’t ring a bell in terms of historical significance, but I’ll confirm. And, if it is being used as a cover, there may be telltale gaps or alterations in the record.”

“That’s what I’m hoping to find out. And Tony—thanks. This means a lot.”

“I’ll get back to you as soon as I have something,” he promised.

My phone buzzed. Seeing Nathan’s name on the screen, I answered immediately, my pulse quickening. Shadow let out a bark and I realized I hadn’t taken her out in hours.

“Nathan, hey—any updates?” I asked, as I punched the button. I strapped on Shadow’s harness and leash and we headed out the front door.

Nathan’s voice was tense, barely above a whisper. “Libby, I just got word from a contact I’ve been keeping tabs on. It sounds like Peter Daniels has gone off the radar. His office sits empty, someone disconnected his phone, and no one at Frontier Fidelity has seen him since yesterday.”

“Wait, he’s gone? Just like that?”

“Yep. And it gets weirder,” Nathan continued. “Apparently, there was a sudden withdrawal of a huge sum from one of his accounts. No one knows where he is or what he’s planning. But from the looks of it, I’d say someone tipped Daniels off that we’re getting closer to the truth.”

I closed my eyes, trying to process the implications. “So, he knew we were planning to go to the mine, maybe even that we’ve connected him to the fraud. He’s running to keep ahead of us.”

“Exactly,” Nathan said grimly. “If he’s disappeared, he might try to cover his tracks permanently—or worse, set up some kind of final sabotage to protect himself. I’d be cautious about that mine trip. We don’t know what he might have done out there.”

My jaw clenched, anger welling up.
